A Study on Pain Measurements during Labor

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to formulate a labor pain measurement tool and to determine validity of each pain measurement such as Adjective Labor Pain Rating Scale, Graphic Rating Scale and Overt Pain Reacting Scale during labor first stage. These three kinds of pain measurement tools were administered to assess the 51 pregnant women¢¥s labor pain during latent phase, active phase and transition phase of labor first stage.
The results of this study were as follows:
1. The scores of Graphic Rating Scale and Overt Pain Reacting Scale were increased according to progress of labor. There were differences of scores measured by Graphic Rating Scale and Overt Pain Reacting Scale among latent phase, active phase and transition phase(p<0. 01).
2. The sum scores of Adjective Labor Pain Rating Scale were increased gradually. There was a difference between the sum score of latent phase and that of active phase (p<0.01).
3. The correlations between Graphic Rating Scale and Adjective Pain Rating Scale were 0.59 in latent phase and 0.48 in active phase (p<0. 001).
4. The correlations between Graphic Rating Scale and Overt Pain Reacting Scale were 0.36 in latent phase (p<0.01) and 0.67 in active phase (p<0. 001).
5. The correlations between Overt Pain Rating Scale and Adjective Labor Pain Rating Scale were 0.55 in latent phase and 0.45 in active phase (p<0.001).
6. The correlations among Overt Pain Reacting Scale, Adjective Labor Pain Rating Scale and Graphic Rating Scale were not significant in transition phase (p>0.05).
